Publisher Square Enix announced today that “Tomb Raider” developer Crystal Dynamics are working on the entry in the “Tomb Raider” series, with one small twist; the series will no longer be called Tomb Raider. The new game, called “Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light”, is going to be released as a downloadable game on PSN, Xbox Live and WiiWare.
While some may question the decision to drop a successful brand name, the reality is that the era of the “Tomb Raider” franchise has come and gone. Lara Croft, meanwhile, is an iconic character and synonymous with the franchise. By giving her top billing, Crystal Dynamics shakes the cobwebs off an antiquated brand without giving up mass appeal.
The announcement said that the game will be released later this year, but there will more information about the game at GDC next week.
